What is this Team Leader program all about?

The Team Leader Training is designed to train you to start, run and maintain a ministry at your church or location. The training includes face to face weekly video conference calls, online classes, reading assignments, karate training videos and homework. A team leader is formulated as a guide. You begin your training and then you are certified to guide others in their training using the books, videos and lesson plans that we provide you with.

What is this Team Leader program all about?


The Team Leader Training is designed to train you to be capable to start, run and maintain a ministry at your church or location. All the initial training is completed online. The Christian Karate Association has maintained active, viable, and effective ministries. The Team Leader program was designed to provide an opportunity for others to start and maintain an effective ministry with no prior experience. A team leader is formulated as a guide. You begin your training and then you are certified to guide others in their training using the books, videos and lesson plans that we provide you with. The Team Leader and their teaching method is similar to a small group study; materials and class outlines are provided, you are the guide. The Team Leader training includes face to face weekly video conference calls, online classes, reading assignments, karate training videos and homework.




What will the Team Leader training cover?


The Team Leader Manual covers: -Organization and History of the Christian Karate Association -Leadership Development -How to Start a Club -Training Gear -CKA Organization and Logo usage -CKA curriculum -How to Teach Karate -Components of a great class -How to complete student testing -Bookkeeping and Legal considerations -Association etiquette The Team Leader training is broken into 2 segents - Team Leader Training which focuses on the ministry, ethics, history, and business concerns. - Karate Training which includes obtaining the first rank, Yellow Belt. There is a video test for both segments to receive the Team Leader certification.




Do I need any martial arts experience?


No prior martial arts experience is needed. You will learn all you need to run a karate ministry through your online training.




What if I already have martial arts experience and/or rank/instructor rank?


Prior experience will make the journey smoother and swifter, but you will be required to cover all the material and complete all the ranks.




How long is the Team Leader training?


The training is approximately 6-8 weeks. For our next class see our online schedule.




Do I have to start in a church?


No. A CKA Club can be started anywhere there is space. A open location is all that is needed. A community center, school, living room, yard, park etc. We will be discussing these options and what makes an ideal location during Team Leader training.




How much does Team Leader training cost?


The online Team Leader and Yellow Belt training is free. It will require a time commitment of personal training, online classes and a weekly video conference. You will need to purchase training gear from our affiliate 1Karate. A new Team Leader candidate qualifies for a 1 time 30% discount off of their first gear purchase.




Do I need to purchase all of my gear now? Can I get some now and some later?


The gear can be purchased in 1 complete package or if necessary it can be purchased in 2 smaller packages over time. You also have the option to purchase pieces individually. As a new Team Leader candidate you will receive a 30% discount on your first order. The biggest discount will be seen if the Complete Team Leader package is purchased. For the best price, order all of the gear now.




How much is the one time coupon good for?


The Team Leader Complete Package retails for a base rate $166.25 (printed copies of the books are optional and add additional cost). The new Team Leader coupon will take a 30% discount, so the base cost for the Team Leader Complete Package would be $116.37.




Can I run a CKA Club by myself or do I need more Team Leaders?


Ideally a club would be run with 2-5 Team Leaders. A club can be started with only 1 Team Leader with a second Team Leader joining in the 1st 6 months.




How many Team Leaders can we have on our team?


A CKA Club can have a maximum of 5 Team Leaders. If you have more people interested in being a Team Leader you can have multiple clubs, operating different class times.




How many students can one TL have?


Each Team Leader is allowed a maximum of 15 students per class.




What if we have more students than is allowed?


The recommended 5 team leaders can have a maximum student load of 75. Additional students will need to be on a waiting list or if you have additional leadership a second club can be started to accommodate an additional 75 students.




Do I get any rank?


Yes. Team Leader Class 1 will include your first rank, Yellow Belt. Continued online training is required and provided up to Black Belt. Team Leaders are required to maintain 1 rank above their students.




What belt do I wear?


During your initial training you will wear a white belt. Once you receive your Team Leader certificate you will wear the Team Leader Belt. This belt was designed to represent the journey from white to black belt and is not considered an instructor belt.




What do my students call me?


The title for Team Leader is Hancho (leader). A certified Black Belt instructor holds the title of Sensei (teacher). An instructor of Sensei's has the title of Shihan.




How will I get new rank myself?


Online training is provided through Black Belt.




Can I become a certified instructor?


Yes. Additional training is provided all the way to Black Belt and Certified Instructor. Classes available are: TLC1 - Team Leader Training Course 1 TLC2 - Team Leader Training Course 2 IDC1 - Instructor Development Course 1 IDC2 - Instructor Development Course 2 IDC3 - Instructor Development Course 3 IDC4 - Instructor Development Course 4




Is it ever required that I test in person or have to go meet an instructor?


The student ranks of Yellow Belt through 2nd Brown Belt can be done online with a video test for certification. The Black Belt rank and Sensei title requires some online classes and an in person class and test.




Can I test for my Karate ranks in person?


Yes. Testing in person can be scheduled, but it is not required.




What other programs or opportunities are there for me in CKA?





Can we create a Facebook page or website for our club, if so what are the requirements?


Each CKA Club is encouraged to create a Facebook page or website for their club. The requirements for creating these will be covered in training.




What is required of my student to purchase?


Students will need to purchase karate training gear and training books. The online store has a complete student package available and several smaller packages so the gear can be purchased over time. The packages are marked as beginner or by belt rank.




Do we order the gear for our students or do they?


Each students will be responsible for purchasing their gear. Students can locate our store at christiankarate.org.




How will my students get quality instruction if I am a low rank and lack experience in teaching?


CKA provides a curriculum for the students that includes a detailed rank book and access to video training. As a Team Leader you will follow a training schedule and review what you have learned as you teach the skills listed on the schedule.




How does CKA fund itself?


CKA is a non-profit organization designed to provide free training and support for Karate ministries. Funding comes through gear sales and book distributions.




Do my students have to pay for classes?


No. Students of Team Leaders do not pay for classes. The can receive donations towards the use of space and to compensate for time, but there is not set cost.




Can I charge for classes?


No. A Team Leader cannot charge for classes until they earn their Instructor certification and Sensei title.




I only want to teach a specific group type, ie kids, adults, special needs. Is that okay?


Yes. Your CKA Club can focus on the people group you would like to reach. It can be limited to 1 or 2 groups or all encompassing.

I cannot make the next Team Leader Training class, when is the next one?

Can I teach other forms of martial arts and still be a Team Leader?


Yes, but not at a CKA Club. A CKA Club will comply and follow our set curriculum. You may teach other forms of martial arts outside of the CKA Club.




I do not agree with the Statement of Faith, can I still become a Team Leader?


No. In order to maintain our integrity as a ministry we hold to our Statement of Faith and require our Team Leaders to do so. If you have a question or concern or need clarification on our Statement of Faith please contact us. We would be happy to talk to you about your concerns.




I have a friend/relative living in a different country that might want to do this program. Do you offer this program in different countries?


Yes. Please share this unique ministry opportunity with anyone that may be interested. As our curriculum is online, this program is not just limited to the United States.

As a new leader of CKA you have the opportunity to start, establish and maintain an effective ministry with the support of an established association, with a large group of people for resources. Below you will find the major benefits we strive to provide all of our instructors. As you continue on your journey towards instructor we know you will find many more benefits.
Large support group – A key benefit of being part of CKA is having a very large instructor support group, with online forums and discussions daily. If you have any problems or questions, you can find someone in our association that has answers and experience with your same problem. You are not alone. The head instructors are also available via email and phone to help you start and maintain a successful program.
 
Established curriculum – The CKA curriculum has been developed and tested over many years with the goal of allowing leaders and students to be able to see the steps along the path to black belt and know that nothing is left out or missed.
